New Downloadable Audiobook Collection

We are happy to announce that we are now offering a collection of downloadable audiobooks for our Customers. You can use this service from home or in the Library. You will need to download the Overdrive Media Console the first time you use the system, but this only has to be done once. After that it's as easy as:
  1. Login by selecting clicking the LOGIN "Scugog Memorial Public Library" from the list of libraries.
  2. Put in the barcode from your library card.
  3. Search for the book you want. If it is available there will be a "Add to Cart" link. If it is not available you can place a hold or add it to your wishlist.
  4. When you have selected the books you want you can "Proceed to Checkout" and select whether you want a 7 day loan or a 14 day loan.
  5. Click the "Download" link to download the selected book(s) to your computer.
  6. Listen to your book on your computer or select "Transfer" if you would like to download it from your computer onto a portable device.
  7. The book will automatically return itself at the end of the loan period (no fines!).

Online Sources for Free Public Domain Books

  • Looking for a book for your ISU that's not on the shelf?
  • Like listening to audiobooks on your computer or portable MP3 device?
  • Have a 'classic' that you've always wanted to read but keep forgetting to pick up?

Books enter the public domain when their copyright expires. Currently, most of the items that fall into this category would have been published before 1923 and would including books written by 'classic' authors, e.g. Charles Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, and William Shakespeare.

  • Text Versions: Can be read online or downloaded to your computer at Project Gutenberg.
  • Audiobook Versions: Can be downloaded as mp3 files to your computer or received as a subscription through iTunes at Librivox.
